Newport Restaurant Week … Fall 2018

October 27, 2018 by Don Jursck Leave a Comment

What is now a national movement, Restaurant Week wherein an area’s finest dining establishments participate in featuring their signature dishes at a very affordable prix fixe price for lunch and for dinner, originated right here in Newport some 12 years ago.  Due to its immense popularity, Newport has gone on to expand the concept to a Spring Restaurant Week as well as one in the autumn season.

This year more than fifty of Newport and Bristol County’s best restaurants will share their abundant culinary talents November 2 thru November 11.  A two course, prix fixe lunch, will be offered at $20; a three course dinner at $35. Additionally, this year a prix fixe premier dinner for $50 is available at some locations.  A complete list of participating restaurants can be found at www.discovernewport.org. Your gastronomic experience will be so impressive that you will want to make plans for Spring Restaurant Week scheduled for April 5-19, 2019, and next year’s Fall Session, November 1–10.

The Music Month of July 2018

June 28, 2018 by Don Jursck Leave a Comment

Newport’s world famous music festivals are beginning this week. First up is The Newport Music Festival that will run from July 4 thru July 22.  This the 50th season for the festival which presents concerts in Newport’s Gilded Age mansions and various other visually and acoustically impressive locations. This year will have forty three concerts presented by artists from all over the world. (www.newportmusic.org)

The dates for the legendary Newport Folk Festival are July 27, 28, and 29. There are four stages of music at Fort Adams State Park where there are striking vistas of Narragansett Bay and the Newport Harbor. The festival will have over fifty acts by fifty six artists that include familiar, well known, and award winning performers. (www.newportfolk.org)

As popular as the Folk Festival is year after year, it may be surpassed by the renowned Newport Jazz Festival which will be held August 3,4 and 5, also at Ft. Adams State Park with its panoramic views of the water. For jazz aficionados, nothing compares with this festival, whose history “successfully made the case for jazz as a legitimate art form”.  All the greats of the genre have performed here and this year’s lineup will not disappoint. (www.newportjazzfest.org)

Occurring in the week between the two great festivals, July 30, 31 and August 1 and 2, is the Newport Bridgefest. Its beginning in 2009, by the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County, was to “bridge” the days between the Folk and Jazz Festivals and to celebrate the musical heritage of Newport. Taking place in and around Newport are concerts (both free and paid), films, educational programs, and plenty of other musical activities for all ages. Ft. Adams will host a free family concert for Bridgefest as well. (www.newportbridgefest.com)

Newport is proud to host- for the second time- the only US stop over of the Volvo Ocean Race. A city known for sailing and competitive racing, Newport, will transform Fort Adams State Park into a remarkable race village.  Opening ceremonies are May 8 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Arrivals from Brazil will stream into Newport over the next few days.

There will be plenty of events for both young and old at the race village. The kids can explore racing with hand on events. There will also be racing right off the shoreline. Pro-AM racing is May 15. In port racing is May 16.

The “leg start” is May 17 and is the highlight of the event. The leg start begins with the dock-out ceremony, continue with in port racing, and end as the fleet exits the bay for the next stop- Lisbon.

If you haven’t made plans yet there is still time. And if you are staying overnight, go to www.ivylodge.com for some great accommodations.
