How a Bed and Breakfast Differs From a Hotel

May 16, 2019 by theivylodge Leave a Comment

Photo of a room at the bed and breakfast Ivy Lodge in Newport, RIWhen people are looking for a place to stay while on vacation or a business trip, they may think of any place that rents out rooms as a hotel. There’s even a common misconception that a bed and breakfast is a subcategory of hotels, when in fact they are distinct types of accommodations. Here are three of the main differences between a hotel and a bed and breakfast.

Size

While not every hotel is a 7,000-room behemoth like the Venetian in Las Vegas, hotels generally tend to be larger than the average bed and breakfast. Even small hotels have upwards of 20 rooms while most bed and breakfasts have a dozen rooms or fewer.

Management and Ownership

Hotels, especially those that are part of a chain, are usually staffed and run by people who live off the property. In contrast, most bed and breakfasts are owned and managed by people who live on the premises or in a nearby home. Unlike a hotel, a bed and breakfast offers the feel of staying as a guest in the welcoming home of an old friend.

Meals

As one might expect, breakfast is a key component of any bed and breakfast. Unlike most hotels, which offer a paltry spread, a bed and breakfast usually offers a bountiful meal to start the day. Some establishments offer private tables for morning diners while others have a family-style setting that adds to the overall friendly ambiance that endears the bed and breakfast to so many travelers.

If you’re looking for the homey, friendly atmosphere of a bed and breakfast, look no further than Ivy Lodge. Ivy Lodge is a bed and breakfast owned and operated by a caring and attentive couple dedicated to preserving the beauty of the centuries-old Victorian mansion and idyllic grounds. Ivy Lodge’s unique rooms offer the perfect setting for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. Keep an eye on the getaway packages for great deals on your next trip. Wise on the Water: Four Tips for Safe Boating

April 11, 2019 by theivylodge Leave a Comment

Boating is a blast! Enjoying a gorgeous day on the water is a wonderful way to relax, have fun, and create memories with friends and family. However, it’s important to consider boat safety to help keep accidents and injuries from ruining an excursion. Here are four simple tips to consider before leaving shore.

Watch the Weather

First and foremost, make sure that the day’s weather is conducive to boating. Bad weather can not only put a damper on a good time, but it can also be dangerous. Boaters should check the forecast for storms and high winds and avoid the water if such conditions are expected. Similarly, if threatening clouds or temperature drops occur after leaving shore, it’s best to head back in.

Have a Safety Plan in Place

Basic safety practices go a long way. Making sure that each boat passenger wears a properly fitted lifejacket is a great first step. Designate a responsible, experienced person to drive the boat, and have someone else ready to step in if the driver becomes incapacitated for any reason. Boaters should use a checklist to make sure all necessary supplies are on board, and inform someone—a friend, the marina, the bed and breakfast where they’re lodging—that they’ll be on the water, along with passenger names, contact information, boat make and model, and expected trip length.

Use Common Sense

It’s easy to become distracted on the water, but using common sense is key to accident prevention. Boaters should always be aware of signage and boat traffic, including no-wake zones, anticipated turns, and avoidance of (or extreme caution in) congested areas. While it may seem like the perfect opportunity to crack open a cold beer, keep in mind that boating under the influence is a hazardous offense that is punishable by law. Save the booze for the land.

Have the Boat Checked

The United States Coast Guard offers boat safety checks free of charge, in which they ensure that the vessel is in good working condition and contains all of the safety equipment required by state and federal governments. If the boat is a rental, ask the owner of the marina when the last safety inspection was performed.

Newport’s stunning harbor and rich history as an Atlantic boating destination make it the perfect choice for those who enjoy time on the water. If you’re planning a trip to the area, Ivy Lodge offers cozy, Victorian-inspired lodging nestled near downtown Newport. Contact us today at 401-849-6865 to make a reservation!

Three Ideas for a Romantic Getaway in Newport

March 27, 2019 by theivylodge Leave a Comment

A romantic getaway is the perfect reason for a trip to Newport, RI. Whether couples are celebrating 20 years of marriage or planning to pop the question, visitors are sure to find attractions and accommodations that suit their romantic plans perfectly. Here are three ways to plan a romantic vacation in Newport.

Stay at a Romantic Bed and Breakfast A close-up of a couple holding hands

This historic coastal town is known for its charming bed and breakfasts. Nestled throughout Newport, B&Bs like Ivy Lodge feature cozy, private rooms that offer the comfort of home and the amenities of a hotel—and then some. Nix the continental breakfast buffet and wake up to a freshly cooked meal before setting off to enjoy a day in the harbor. Come back to a beautiful, refreshed room. Repeat.

Visit a Vineyard

Tour the vineyards and sample wine at one (or more!) of Bristol County’s three wineries: Newport Vineyards, Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards, and Greenvale Vineyards. Each offers its own specialty wines, made with locally grown grapes, that provide a distinct East Coast flavor. Find a favorite, grab a bottle, and take it back to the B&B to enjoy together after dinner. For those who prefer beer, Newport has breweries, too. Taproot Brewing Co. is located at the same location as Newport Vineyards, and Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Company and Ragged Island Brewing Company are both nearby.

Experience the Cliff Walk

A popular Newport attraction, and with good reason, the Cliff Walk is the perfect way to experience both nature and history. As an escape from the stressful routines and hassles of everyday life, it’s a great opportunity to live in the moment and leave cares behind for a truly relaxing experience. Couples enjoy walking along the 3.5-mile path that borders the rocky shoreline, taking in the views of gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, Gilded Age mansions, and crashing waves. If an engagement is on the agenda, the Cliff Walk is the perfect spot for a proposal.

Whether you’ve got your eye on Newport for your upcoming anniversary or just a weekend away, we’d love for you to stay with us at Ivy Lodge . Our quaint inn offers modern conveniences within a Victorian-inspired atmosphere that’s perfect for celebrating with your partner. We even offer a romantic getaway package . Five Family-friendly Activities in Newport

February 4, 2019 by theivylodge Leave a Comment

Newport’s array of family-friendly activities make it a great spring break, summer break, or long weekend option for kids of all ages. While planning your vacation, create a fun-filled agenda with a few of our five favorite things for families to do while in town.

Save the Bay Exploration Center and Aquarium

A famioly smiling for a photo

Located at Easton’s Beach Rotunda, this non-profit organization is dedicated to the preservation of Narragansett Bay. Kids will love getting up close and personal with more than 40 local aquatic species. Each month has a special theme that includes games, activities, and exhibits to enjoy, so there’s always something new to explore. Admission is just $8 (free for members and kids under 3).

Brenton Point State Park

The whole family will love the gorgeous panoramic ocean views at this state park on Ocean Drive, located on the grounds of a former estate. Spend some time outdoors hiking, fishing, or just having a picnic with the sound of the Atlantic in the background. This 89-acre property is also a popular place for kite flying, hosting the annual Newport Kite Festival.

Newport Cliff Walk

Older kids will love this 3.5-mile walk along Rhode Island’s rocky shoreline. Not only is it an incredible adventure, but it offers views of historic architecture, native birds, and wildflowers. Bring a picnic and take the trolley back from Bellevue Avenue. Newport Cliff Walk is a designated U.S. National Recreation Trail.

The Breakers

Newport is full of historic mansions, which may not seem like the most natural choice for sightseeing with kids. However, The Breakers, one of the most popular of these storied estates, recently introduced a new audio tour designed for children. They’ll love hearing stories about life in the home, narrated by a talking house and a flying dragon. This mansion, once owned by the Vanderbilt family, is a National Historic Landmark.

Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad Dinner Train

Kids who love trains will love eating dinner while going for a ride. Along the way, learn about how the railroad helped shape Newport’s heritage. During the summer months, families can even book an ice cream ride!

When planning a family vacation in Newport, consider staying at Ivy Lodge. We offer friendly, homestyle lodging in a beautiful setting. Our bed and breakfast has several beautiful historic rooms with modern amenities, including the Satterlee Suite, which offers spacious accommodations for a family of four. Call 401-849-6865 to learn about available dates or book reservations online for an unforgettable family stay.
